What I Know About Modern Leadership

5 years ago I wrote about Modern Leadership in Recruitment.  Rereading it today, most of it still holds up – maybe even more so nowadays.

On October 1, Zinger drops our new "Management Techniques" course, and a lot of this thinking runs right through it.  I’m excited about this one.

Getting the role of player-coach right is the hardest (and most lucrative) leadership challenge in recruitment.

Here’s the short version of what I wrote back then – and what I still believe:

🤔 Believe in your people, or you’re finished before you start.
🤔 Be good at the job yourself – credibility matters more than charm.
🤔 Ditch mezzanine managers.  Modern leaders are in the traffic, shoulder-to-shoulder.
🤔 Give your team room to play in the grey.  Programmatic playbooks kill creativity.
🤔 Delight in your people’s success – even when they out-earn you.
🤔 Invest in their lives beyond the desk, or your culture will be skin-deep.
🤔 Share everything.  Hoarding is lonely and undermines business resilience.
🤔 Forget internal competition.  Great leaders create opportunity, not rivalries.
🤔 Make work fun.  Performance thrives when dread doesn’t.

What would you add to the list?

Watch out for Management Techniques from October 1.  Subtle hacks for huge gains.

Have a nice day. 🌞
