Could Zinger turn you into recruitment's version of Scott Pendlebury to the AFL?
- Marcus Lynch
I love footy (Aussie Rules). I even carved out one pretty average season in the AFL twos, back in the days before there were multiple feeder leagues into the big time. These days, I coach juniors and have been lucky enough to get involved in interleague footy on my side of town.
One thing that always sticks with me is the way AFL academies and Coates League teams (U18 state comp) evaluate players. Sure, they look for the obvious qualities: burst speed, and kicking efficiency. But what talent scouts talk about in hushed tones... is the player’s weapon.
Can they launch into packs, timing their leap to perfection, and pull down contested marks like Hawthorn’s Calsher Dear or Melbourne’s Tayla Harris?
Can they create time and space in the heaviest congestion, slowing the game to a crawl in their own minds, opening it up with vision and composure the way Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury or St Kilda’s Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera do?
Or maybe their weapon is pure brutality – tackling and contested ball dominance like Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell or North Melbourne's Ash Riddell, giving their outside teammates the extra possession edge.
Weapons stand out. They change games. And on freezing suburban mud pits at midweek interleague training, you hear the same question over and over again... “what's their weapon?”
It got me thinking – does the same apply in recruitment? Do million-dollar billers have a secret weapon? Some magical, otherworldly skill that makes them uncatchable?
It’s a better story if the answer is yes. But in my experience, it’s a definitive no.
The recruiters who consistently top the billing charts aren’t superheroes. They don’t leap packs, they don’t turn chaos into slow motion, they don’t bulldoze through the competition with one defining trait. What they do have, is the ability to nail dozens of little steps across a 360-degree recruitment cycle – over and over again.
Elite recruiters win by stacking small hacks. By making every client interaction, every shortlist presentation, every feedback call, just a fraction sharper than the next recruiter. The compound effect of those small wins is massive.
And that’s exactly why Zinger works. We don’t pretend to hand you a magic weapon. Zinger gives recruiters simple, actionable lessons that embed consistency – the kind of repeatable habits that separate the good from the great.
You don’t need freakish athleticism or a once-in-a-generation skill in reccy. You just need an anchor, that keeps you doing all of those little things, better... every day. ⚓
That’s your weapon. 🏉
Have a nice day. 🌻 🌞
